Draaawwing it out

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 13, 2007

I spent the big day drawing yesterday, personally I found having to do sooo much technical drawing for this project a little frustrating.  Carefully lining up lines on tracing paper has little to teach me, and shurely no relevence in the real world where a professional presentation would have CAD drawings (orthographic ones anyway). Basically I would have gained much more by spending the time on making the isometric drawing more creative/instructional or further refining the final models.

Grunt work

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 12, 2007

Down to the grunt work now, I am still making some minor changes as I go but with the basic aim to get a selection of mint models and complete dimensions for the final presentation.

I have added a cut out pattern here (good old sun ray motif) to demonstrate the light projection with the intention of this pattern to be customiseable.

Tapering the handel created a slightly more interesting resulting cut out, with tie in to the sun ray pattern.

technical stuff

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 8, 2007

I have spent the day yesterday nutting out the details of the cut outs and simplifying where possible. This helped me spring a few more ideas to do with the detailing.
Next the insert:
I would like it to be tidily folded away and easy to fold out
simple in construction
possibly replaceable (so that people could make there own??

Handle time

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 7, 2007

Here I have looked at adding a handle option to the design,
variations of this look good and work well,
The only problem is that the cutout of the handle would mess with my plans to have a projection cutout as mentioned on the previous post.

Hmmm –  what to do??

I think the next step would be to look at putting a window on the inside which could be either coloured or printed.

The only resivations I have about this is the adding of another material,
which seems a pity when I have, so far, only used card and paper (4 pcs total).

playing with the light

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 7, 2007

Something I have been meaning to experiment with for a while is the light projecting through cut outs onto the table…
It works really well. It could be coloured with a filter.
The cutout could reflect the theme.

paper insert

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 7, 2007

Folding the paper up like this I have found alows for more room inside the box, but more interestingly leaves a great pattern on the paper, here it looks leaf like – I like it!

More folding

Posted by damonstenhouse on November 7, 2007

I have looked at many different ways of folding the sides in,
This looked particularly smart with stiff card – revealing the candel in the centre.

Well, another day of cutting up paper and cardboard with lots more ideas coming out, progressing into something good I hope, the one I think that has potential is this concept. The idea being that the box fans out, candle can be put in a hole in the middle, possibly sized to put a wine bottle lid. Paper screens on each side can be shaped, printed and cut to suit the occasion (xmas tree, Halloween, Bday etc.) The box retains the remainder of the candles .
